Cheng Dapeng was born in Hengyang, Hunan province, in 1962. Initially, he was entirely self-taught as an artist and sculptor but, after highly encouraging comment about his work in the media, he went to study in 1989 under the renowned Chinese artist (now professor) Pan He at the Department of Sculpture at Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts.
Since 2001, Chen has created over 300 sculptures, including many important public works. He has sculpted important figures in Chinese life such as Deng Xiaoping.
Recent highlights in his distinguished career include participation in the Shanghai Expo 2010 where he was selected to represent Chinese arts in general and sculpture specifically.
In November 2013, he held a most successful show at The Louvre in Paris, showing 39 works.
During 2015-16, he will be showing a total of 41 sculptures in a travelling exhibition in the UK.
